FIND THE PRODUCT--The internet has web listing services. Register your username and post the interested products for supply information.
ESTABLISH POTENTIAL SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIPS–Select the suppliers you want to do business with. Market to make them want to do business with you. Ask questions, check and confirm details. Ask how long they’ve been in the business, what companies they manufacture for, which trade shows they attend and for how long.
NARROW SUPPLIER LIST–Ask for product samples and review them. Discuss the price, trade relationship shipping and payment terms. Gather detailed information when placing the purchase order.
UNDERSTAND AND USE TRADE TERMS–Before order is placed, shipment and payment must be understood and confirmed. An import management company may be used to negotiate trade terms.
UNDERSTAND PAYMENT TERMS–Terms are negotiable. It is common to pay 30% when the order is placed, and the remaining 70% when the product is shipped.
NATIONAL REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS–YOU are responsible for seeing that everything brought into the country meet these requirements. Study compliance issues, and know the requirements are met. Government authorities regulate importation and have websites to help you.
CUSTOMS HOUSE BROKER AND FORWARDER–A customs house broker should be consulted before you ordering. Obtain a list at your local international trade organization and customs office. Select one with individual service. Obtain help with custom duties costs from local customs bureau, or on line.
PURCHASE ORDER–Place a trial order and then a written purchase order. Give a detailed description of the product, packaging requirements, product requirements,trade terms, and documents needed for shipping
INSPECTION COMPANY–Select an inspection company to do onsite inspection at the factory. Give them all the details, or they may think the items are fine, and you may not. This helps avoid problems with quality, receiving defective or non-conforming goods, or other issues.
TRACK–Track both transportations and customs clearance. This is done by your forwarder and customs broker. Issue a power of attorney to your broker and purchase customs bond for your importation. Be available if assistance in is needed.
KEEP RECORDS–Make sure when receiving your products that good records are kept.
COUNTERFEIT OR BRANDED PRODUCTS–You must confirm authorized retailers by contacting the brand owner.
