Hi, Brendan here from China Import Formula. Today’s tip is how to pick a good customs broker. Now customs broker or customs agent depending where you’re from is very important for 2 reasons.

Firstly, a customs agent/customs broker will tell you whether your goods are legal versus illegal. Remember, ultimately you’re responsible for the goods you bring in. Just like you’re responsible paying your tax and you’re responsible for filing your taxes correctly, not your accountant. It’s the same thing with the customs broker and a customs agent.

The second thing a customs broker or customs agent will do for you is they will show you how to classify your goods in such a way that you may avoid tariffs. Remember, sometimes you can pay 5, 10, 15 percent or even nothing depending on how a good is classified and it’s absolutely essential that you have the right advise before you move forward out with the right customs broker. So how to pick the right customs broker?

Okay, three tips; tip number 1 is you wanna ask how long they’ve been around for. You don’t wanna pick someone who’s just been around for say 1, 2 or 3 years but someone who’s been around for 5, 10, 15 years. This is really important.

Secondly, check their responsiveness. If you give them a call, do they pick up? Do they return your calls very promptly? You send them an email, how long does it take for them to get back? If someone’s taking too long, it doesn’t matter whether they’re the cheapest, because if the service is bad, then when push comes to shove, you’re not actually gonna be able to comply with your local laws. You can get in a lot of trouble.

And the third thing is cast a wide net. Don’t just go for the first quote. Make sure that you have 3 or 5 different quotes from different customs brokers so you pick the best one in terms of responsiveness as well as price. Remember, they’re very important part of your team and you need to have the right team around you when you’re importing from China and if you do, you’re gonna minimize your risk and you’re gonna grow your business very, very quickly with minimum stress.

So that’s the tip for today and hope you stay tuned for some more tips on how to grow and start your importing business. Bye for now.
